Systems theory: :
What is an explanation?

Explanations are descriptions of operations that I can use to produce those phenomena that I want to explain.

There are various descriptions, some of which are explanations.

One can explain the phenomenon of the temple door opening as if guided by ghost hands in very different ways. One explanation is that ghost hands are involved. Another explanation is that the priest hypnotises the spectators so that they imagine that the doors open. One of many possible explanations is the constructive explanation of Heron of Alexandria, who was naturally more loved by the gods than by the temple guards with this explanation.

One possible explanation

Instructions:

Examine your own explanations !

bild

It is not a question of the correctness of the explanation, but of whether the explanation really describes a set of operators which, when realised, open and close the door. Of course, I do not know exactly how one can invoke gods so effectively that they open doors, but if one can, they will open the doors. Therefore, this is a permissible explanation, it describes a procedure, whether I can bring about the procedure is another question.

Think about how the different explanations differ !

And ask yourself which explanations you like best and why.

This clarifies how the terms "phenomenon" and "explanation" are used in this course, what remains for now is . "system".
