From the colour and chaos of Hinduism to the harmony and humility of Buddhism, religion, in all its guises, is the pumping heart of the subcontinent. As an atheist, faith is a beautiful mystery to me, and where better to improve my understanding than India? In March I went on a five-week tour, covering the length and breadth of the country. On Easter Sunday I met Christians in Kerala, flooding out of churches in congregations the size of which I had never seen before. I saw cremations on the Ganges and visited a Muslim home in the Mumbai slums. I even meditated at the residence of the Dalai Lama. The crowning jewel in my religious pilgrimage was the Golden Temple. This majestic “Gurdwara” is run entirely by volunteers with free food and accommodation for all, regardless of background. | |
